Transcription
London 26 March 1745
Sir,
On board the Assurance, Capt[ain] Fisher - - is a case of American plauts in Earth. They are a present to you from my good friend D[octo]r Lawson.
I knowing this his intention by his consulting me to know what plants I thought would be acceptable, I selected these as being hardy and naturallised to our climate & consequently somwhat better adapted to endure your colder Air, yet I wish they do not require as much protection from the severity of your winters, as plants from between the Tropicks do with us. - Possibly you have already some of them, yet if but a few of them be acceptable, I shall be much pleased.
And whatever other American plants in this inclosed Catalogue will be acceptable, you may freely command any that I am possessed of. - In regard of that Esteem your merit claims,
I am, S[i]r,
Your most obedient
Humble Servant
M[ark] Catesby
P. S. This case of plants were intended to be sent last May and they were sent to the ship with the consent of the skipper, yet they were refused to be taken on board.
