Abstract
Philip Miller has received two parcels with seeds from Linnaeus. He should have written earlier, but he awaited a ship so that he could send Linnaeus seeds.
Most of the seeds that Miller has sent he received recently from America. To many of them he has given titles from Patrick Browne’s “Historia Jamaicae” [
The Civil and natural history of Jamaica
]. However, Miller criticizes Browne’s work. The synonyms are poor. Browne has not even described a fourth of the plants of Jamaica. Furthermore, many plants are not correctly delineated.
Miller has sent Linnaeus fruits of two species of
Mahogany
, of which one grows in the islands of Bahamas and is delineated by Catesby, II, tab. 81 [Miller refers to Catesby’s
The Natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands
, vol. II was published in 1743]. The other one is from Jamaica. Since they have different fruits, Miller is sure that they are two distinct species. Miller believes that a new genus should be formed for these two named
Cedrus
.
In the autumn Miller awaits many seeds from America; Linnaeus will have his share. Miller will also collect and send all the seeds in the Chelsea Physic Garden that Linnaeus is missing. He will send them in the autumn, so that they can be sown in the spring. In return, he asks Linnaeus to send him seeds from the Uppsala University Botanical Garden [Linnéträdgården].
Miller has many plants of
Ehretia
in his Garden. Many have flowered but not yet yielded seeds. Browne mentions
Ehretia
in his book under
Cerassus
, but Miller fears that the characters are wrong. Miller will send Linnaeus his illustrations of plants as soon as they are coloured.
Miller entreats Linnaeus to send him his recently published
Species plantarum
,
Flora Svecica
[Miller presumably refers to the second edition, published in 1755] and
Systema naturae
[Miller presumably refers to the sixth edition, published in 1746]. He promises to send Linnaeus something in return.

Viro Eruditissimo Reique Herbariae Peritissimo,
Carolo Linnaeo, Equiti Aurato,
S[alutem] P[lurimam] D[icit]
Philipo Miller.
Fasciculos duos seminum mihi a te missos tute accepi, pro quibus tibi multas ago gratias receptionemque antea agnoscerem, sed Navem expectavi, ut tibi aliqua mitterem semina, & valde doleor, quod non potui tibi antea mittere.
Plurima horum semina nuperrime ex America accepi, quibus nonnullos adjeci titulos ex
Historia Jamaicae Browneum
Fructa [
sic
] integra duorum Mahogony specierum misi, una in Insulis Bahamae crescit, quae a Catesbaeo delineata est vol. 2. tab. 81, folia cujus pari pennatae sunt. Alia ex Jamaica impari pennata, & quia valde in fructu differunt, itaque distinctas esse species certus sum. Specimina duarum specierum tibi cito mittere spero; novum genus pro eis constituendum esse existimo sub nomine
Cedro
.
Autumno plurima expecto semina ex America & quum adveniunt tibi partem mittam seminaque horto nostro omnium plantarum, quas te carere puto, mittamque tibi Autumno, ut vere serenda accipies; aliquaque precor, ut mihi mittas semina ex horto vestro.
Plurimas
Ehretiae
plantas in Horto Nostro possideo, quarum nonnulla floruere, sed nondum semina protulerunt; si florent anno vertente, specimen tibi mittam. D[ominus] Browne in libro suo memorat sub nomine
Cerasus
, sed characteres suos falsos esse verior [
sic
].
Figuras meas plantarum tibi mittam, quamprimum coloratae erunt. Istae enim quae editae non ut vellum [
sic
] perfectae sunt, aliaque editio cito finita erit.
Libra [
sic
] tua nuperrime edita mihi ut mittas obnixe rogo, exemplare [
sic
],
species plantarum, Florae Suecicae Systematisque naturae
, quia nulla exemplariae [
sic
] bona possideo. Mittamque reciproce aliquid quod tibi abhinc deeret [
sic
]; salvere te plurimum jubeo. Vale!
Dabam Chelseyano Maij 17. 1756.
