Abstract
The previous May, Philip Miller sent Linnaeus seeds that he hopes that he by now has received [Miller presumably refers to his letter dated 22 April 1754{L1740}]. Miller has read Linnaeus’s
Species plantarum
(1753). However, many species are omitted and many others are considered mere varieties; Miller has grown these for more than twenty years and always found them to be the same. Since Linnaeus, in the preface, had asked botanists to send him plants that are not found in the work, Miller sends Linnaeus seeds of many species. If it pleases Linnaeus, Miller can later send more seeds. Miller will also send specimens of those plants that do not give seeds in the Chelsea Physic Garden.
In
Species plantarum
, Linnaeus considers Joseph Pitton de Tournefort’s
Solanoides
to be the same as Charles Plumier’s
Rivina
, but these plants are different everywhere.
Solanoides
has only four stamens but
Rivina
eight.
Volkameria
, William Houston’s
Douglassia
and
Ligustrioides
are placed together, but they differ regarding class;
Douglassia
has five stamens but
Ligustrioides
six. Since Linnaeus has not seen these plants, Miller believes him to have received false information through other works. Miller offers to send seeds and specimens that Linnaeus can study.
If it had not been so difficult to send plants, Miller could have sent plants that do not yield seeds in England. However, Miller will send those that are difficult to receive and those that yield seeds in the Chelsea Physic Garden, if Linnaeus tells him what he wants.
In his last letter [Linnaeus to Miller, 20 June 1754{L1777}] , Linnaeus mentioned a disciple who would go to England and bring with him Linnaeus’s
Flora Anglica
(1754) and the new edition of
Genera plantarum
[Miller refers to the fifth edition,
Genera plantarum [...] editio quinta
(1754)]. However, Miller has heard nothing and he needs the books.

Maio ultimo tibi fasciculum misi seminum, quae a te accepta es[s]e spero gratesque fuisse. Tuum librum de speciebus plantarum legi, in quo plurimae species omissi [
sic

sic
] quae omissi [
sic
] plusquam 20 annis colui semperque eadem esse inveni. Utque omnes invites Botanicos in praefatione libelli Tui tibi ullas mittere plantas, quae ibi non nominatae sunt, itaque hicce tibi mitto aliqua semina plurium specierum, quae si distincte in horto tuo serebis, tunc differentiam videbis. Sique hocce approbares, frequenter tibi mittam aliarum specierum uti in horto nostro maturescunt. Tibi mittam exemplar[i]a earum quae non hicce semina maturescunt pro informatione tua.
Libro tuo
Solanoides Tourn
. eadem fecisti cum
Rivina Plum
. Sed different omissi [

] toto caelo. Solanoides enim tantum 4 habet stamina &
Rivina Plum
. 8; hujus duo distinctae species sunt
Volkameria, Douglassia Houst
. quae & Ligustrioides junxisti sed in classe differunt. Douglassia 5 stamina aequalia, Ligustrioides 6 stamina habent.
Aliquae omissi [
sic
] species hic annotavi quae omissi [
sic
] perdidi; si me illis suppeditare potes, me tibi devinceres.
In litteris tuis ultimis mentionem fecisti Discipulorum tuorum unum in Brittania adventurus omissi [

Florum Anglicanum
novamque tuam editionem Genera omissi [
