Abstract
Linnaeus has sent Philip Miller a letter [this letter has not come down to us] where he told him that he was happy to have received seeds. Miller promises to send more seeds.
Miller has given antique names to seeds that have long been known. He wants Linnaeus to confirm the synonyms. Thus, errors will be avoided.
The Chelsea Physic Garden is abounding with plants. Miller therefore hopes to be able to send Linnaeus more seeds than any other correspondent. He asks Linnaeus to send him a list of the plants that he wants. In the spring Miller will send dried specimens with the first ship that leaves England for Sweden. He will also send some new genera that he cannot incorporate in any of Linnaeus’s classes; he would like to know whether Linnaeus is able to do this.
On the basis of Linnaeus’s
Hortus Upsaliensis
, Miller has written down which seeds he is missing. [Miller probably refers to the
Hortus Upsaliensis
, which was published in 1748, as he, at the end of the letter asks for a delineation of the structure of Linnaeus’s greenhouses, reproduced in the dissertation published in 1745]. He would be grateful for these and also for new seeds, if Linnaeus has some that he does not need. Linnaeus believes
Cassine vera
and
Aquifolium caroliniense
to be one and the same plant. However, Miller is sure that they do not belong to the same genus. Miller has many plants of
Cassine vera
and
Aquifolium caroliniense
which he hopes will flower next summer. Linnaeus will then have specimens.
Miller would be happy to receive Linnaeus’s
Species plantarum
(1753).
Flora Svecica
[the first edition was published in 1745; unclear if Miller refers to that one, or the forthcoming edition, published in 1755] and
Systema naturae
[Miller presumably refers to the sixth edition, published in 1746] he can get hold of in London.
Peter Collinson has shown Miller a book in quarto in which the structure of Linnaeus’s greenhouses is delineated [see above, probably a reference to the dissertation
Hortus Upsaliensis
, published in 1745]. Miller looks forward to receive this work.
Linnaeus’s last letter had an abrupt ending. Something is missing that is necessary to explain the sentence. Miller does not know how this could have happened.

Viro Eruditissimo
D[omino] Carolo Linnaeo,
Equ[iti] Aurat[o] &c. &c.,
S[alutem] pl[urimam] Dic[it]
Philip Miller.
Literis tuis accepi, quibus me informes semina quae tibi misi grata fuisse.

]
Cassine vera
&c. et
Aquifolium Caroliniense
Quum mihi scribes, laetus ero accipere
exemplum species Plantarum, Flora Suecica
& Systema Naturae eruere possum in Londini. D[ominu]s Collinson mihi monstravit Liber in quarto, in quo structura conservatorum tuorum delineata est. Hoc accipere laetus ero.
Ultimae tuae litterae finita [
