Abstract
Illustrated and hand coloured roll of parchment, dated 1734, with text in Dutch and signed “J. S. Croppenbergh”. The image describes the mountain Sri Pada or ”Sacred footprint” in central Sri Lanka, in Europe also known as “Adam’s Peak”, and the inscription that were said to have been found on Adam’s and Eve’s graves located at the top of the mountain.
At the top of Sri Pada is as 1,8 meter wide rock formation shaped like a footprint, which in Muslim and Christian tradition has been interpreted as a footprint of Adam, who according to a widespread legend was living in Sri Lanka following the expulsion from Paradise. The place is still a well-known pilgrimage site.
The manuscript was previously a part of the collections of Lund University Historical Museum (LUHM), but was transferred to the University Library in 1870. Most likely it was originally part of the collections of Kilian Stobaeus, which in 1735 were donated to Lund University, forming the so-called Musaeum Stobaeanum. In the first inventory of the Museum Stobaeanum (1753) it is described as ”1 på pergament målad tafla öfver adami begrafning”.
