Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 6 August 1944, the witness was arrested in Katowice, accused of being active in the underground. She was being tortured during interrogations. On 13 November 1944, she was among twenty other prisoners who were selected for transport to Ravensbrück. The newcomers spent the whole night outdoors, waiting for registration. The next day, they were taken to the baths. Their arrival at the camp followed the standard procedure; they had to bathe, hand over all their things, and change their clothes. After bathing, the witness was assigned to barrack 21 where the prisoner functionary took a hard attitude towards her fellow inmates. In January 1945, a special barrack was set up for mothers with infants and pregnant women. At that time, the infant mortality rates were very high at Ravensbrück.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
