Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 21 October 1939, the witness was among a number of Polish citizens who were arrested by the German authorities. After the trial, they were transferred to a prison in Bydgoszcz where they would be incarcerated for three months. They were assigned to work inside the prison, plaiting baskets. Those prisoners who did not reach their quotas in addition to rations being withheld were punished by the authorities. All the prisoners were forced to do physical exercises. The witness was transferred to Berlin. Between October 1941 and September 1943 he was isolated from the rest of the prison population. In October 1943, he was sent to the Wuhlheide camp where about 1000 prisoners were held. Hunger pervaded the camp. Prisoners who did not follow the rules and regulations were sent to the punishment block (Bunker) without getting any food for 24 hours. In November 1943, the witness was transported to the Gross Beeren camp. In December 1943, he was sent to the Dritte munitions factory where about 3000 prisoners were forced to labour.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
