Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 15 June 1943, the witness was arrested by the Gestapo and transferred to a prison in Augustów. On 20 June 1943, he was among 400 other prisoners who were selected for transport to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. The newcomers were led into the bathhouse where they were ordered to turn in all items in their possession. After bathing, they went into quarantine. For a month the new prisoners were forced to do physical exercises. Those who were unable to do the exercises properly were punished by the guards. After finishing quarantine, the witness was assigned to work in quarries which was extremely dangerous. The daily life consisted of physically demanding labour and inadequate food rations with a low calorie value which made the prisoners feel exhausted. In May 1944, the witness was selected for transport to Sachsenhausen where he was responsible for searching through the prisoners´ belongings that had been confiscated by the Nazis. On 21 October 1944, the witness was among 500 other prisoners who were transported to Neuengamme where they would be used as slave laborers.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
