Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
The institute deemed some of the testimonies to contain particularly sensitive information, and chose therefore to classify them until 2004. This is one of the previously classified testimonies.
In September 1939, the city of Lwów was surrounded by the German forces in the West and by the Soviet troops in the East. At that time, the witness was involved in a Polish volunteer battalion, located in Lwów. After the authorities had decided to leave the city of Lwów for the protection of the Soviet troops, the Polish forces were ordered to hand over their weapons, which was a traumatic experience; as a result of this action a number of Polish officers committed suicide. A group of Polish soldiers escaped to Romania, taking advantage of the chaos which reigned in Lwów. On 24 December 1939, the Soviet authorities decided that Polish currency (zloty) would be exchanged for Soviet currency (rubles). This caused a serious economic problem for many Polish families. A large number of Polish intellectuals and their family members were arrested by the Soviet secret service (N.K.V.D.) and deported to unknown destinations. Prisoners were taken to N.K.V.D. for interrogations. Every single prisoner was interrogated by four policemen. During several days, the policemen were trying to break the will and sprit of the prisoners. In 1940, the witness was taken for interrogation, suspected of being involved in a political organization. N.K.V.D. developed a sort of psychological terror; prisoners who refused to answer questions during interrogations would be forced to watch other prisoners being executed. The Catholic Church as an institution was transformed to a religious association, required to pay very high taxes. On 14 April 1940, about 40 000 Polish citizens were deported deep into Soviet and acts of rape were performed on young girls. On 27 February 1942, the witness was arrested and taken for interrogation to the Gestapo´s HQ where he was tortured as a punishment for being active in the underground.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
