Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
The institute deemed some of the testimonies to contain particularly sensitive information, and chose therefore to classify them until 2004. This is one of the previously classified testimonies.
In July 1940, the witness along with his friend, who had been deported from Wielkopolska, started education of the Polish youth. After two German citizens had been killed by an unidentified perpetrator, the authorities decided that about 80 Polish citizens would be arrested in the Pleśna district. Shortly afterwards, they were transferred to a prison in Tarnów. The witness went into hiding for three days because the German authorities had been searching for him. In 1942, he became a member of the Polish underground. In the summer of 1944, the Polish underground, operating in the Tarnów area, numbered around 2000 armed members. After the collapse of the Warsaw uprising in October 1944, many members of The Polish Home Army (A.K.) went into hiding. From the middle of 1943 to May 1944, the witness was forced to work on the railway embankment. One of his friends was arrested by the Gestapo, charged with illegal weapon possession and attacking a German soldier. During the interrogation, the witness was used as an interpreter and changed the facts, protecting his friend. After finishing interrogation, the witness’ friend was taken to the railroad station but he escaped. On 17 January 1945, the Tarnów district was liberated by the Soviet troops.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
