Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
The witness was arrested in December 1942 for expediting the sale of a piglet. She was beaten and thrown into a basement. Shortly afterwards, she was transported to a prison in Płock, where she was held for four months. In April 1943, she was transferred to a prison in Olsztyn where she was forced to hard labour; her work involved unloading and arranging skis. She fell ill, as a result of the hard work and was laid up in hospital for two months. She hadn’t quite recovered by the time she was transported away to Ravensbrück. She arrived on a transport of sixty women. After arriving at the camp, the newcomers were told to turn in all items in their possession and take a bath. Then they went into quarantine for six weeks. The healthier women went to be transported, while the witness stayed behind. She worked the sand and cleaned out ditches. She fell ill and spent two weeks in the infirmary. After she came back from the infirmary, she was taken away to Jugendlager for extermination. A most effective method of finishing people off was the combination of inadequate food rations, strict discipline and lack of proper clothing.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
