Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
In October 1941, the witness was arrested in Cracow, accused of being involved in an underground organization. She was sent to Montelupich jail where she would be held in solitary confinement for a week. This was done to hinder communication between the witness and her co-conspirators. She was summoned for questioning on a daily basis. The witness was being tortured by the Nazis during interrogations because she wouldn’t admit to the charges levelled against her. In September 1942, the witness was transferred to the Auschwitz concentration camp where she would spend three years as a political prisoner. At that time, the whole camp was one great big cesspit. There was only one toilet at the end of the camp; unable to make it there in time, women would relieve themselves along the way. The combination of unhygienic conditions, starvation and brutal treatment made living in Auschwitz horrible.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
