Abstract
Johan Otto Hagström thanks Archiater Abraham Bäck for his letter – chest pain and gout has prevented Hagström from answering it earlier.
Concerning Professor Bergius’
Flora Capensis
, Hagström has in a letter asked our great Linnaeus if he considered the book worth buying. Linnaeus replied that Bergius had recorded new species instead of new genera, which had previously been clearly defined by Linnaeus. Linnaeus gave many examples of this in his letter to Hagström and added that Bergius had received a thrashing in the tenth edition of
Systema Naturae
, as one of the "Botanophili", those who holler about new genera, which are in fact only new species plantarum. Hence, when it comes to botany, Hagström infers, Bergius does not have much to boast.
Hagström also questions Bergius' work on a cloudberry moss (
Sphagnum
) for being completely useless, because even with a long hop pole you do not reach any terra firma if cloudberries,
Rubus chamaemorus
, thrive there. Forest mosses, such as
Polytrichum commune
,
bryum
, and
mnium
, would pay off better, and alder marshes provide good crop and grass.
If the position of Professor Bergianus is filled the way the newspapers have it, Doctor Swartz will probably still not be satisfied. He is rich and has bought the manor Näsby just outside of Linköping for more than 20 000 pieces of plate. Supposedly he has an agreement with Doctor Clas Fredric Hornstedt about the lectureship in Linköping. It is also rumored that Hornstedt is engaged to the daughter of a Finnish merchant with a property worth a barrel of gold.
M.D. Lars Grönberg died in June, at the age of 29. He was a rich man's son, who without studies bought himself a doctor's hat in Germany. According to Hagström, both Grönberg and Heiligtag were born a disgrace to medicine and their memory is as short as their reputation and shady life.
Prolonged rain has hindered haymaking, but people are elated about the peace with Russia. King Gustav III has bravely risked his life for his country and revived the old glory of war.
The day before yesterday, the rector [Samuel Erik Älf] held a wedding for his older daughter and assistant vicar Wagner in Söderköping. The parish is the smallest in the diocese, but the father-in-law is presumably rich and able to provide.
Hagström is now in his 77th year, decrepit, and bothered by a vertigo which he believes will be the end of him. He persists with deepest reverence the humble servant of Abraham Bäck, honourable Archiater and Knight of the Order of the Polar Star.
Notes
Flora Capensis: Bergius, Peter Jonas,
. Stockholmiæ, typis et impensis direct. Laur. Salvii, 1767. Bergius’ published his
Plantae Capenses
in September 1767, whereas Linnaeus’
Mantissa
appeared two months later, in November 1767. Thus, Bergius beat Linnaeus to the finish line in naming some of the new species. This may have added to Linneaus’ parsimonious assessment of Bergius’ work.
Olof Swarz was appointed to the chair of Professor Bergianus in 1791, and held it until his death in 1818.
The reason for Hagström's hostility towards Grönberg is unclear. Grönberg did study at Uppsala University for five years, and defended a dissertation in Greifswald on the botanical garden,
De horto Gryphico
, in 1782. He donated his herbarium with more than 3000 specimens to the Cathedral School in Linköping.
The peace with Russia: i.e., the Treaty of Värälä, signed 14 August 1790.
