Linnaeus thanks the Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences [Kungliga Svenska Vetenskapsakademien, i.e., Pehr Elvius] for something being sent to him.
He informs Elvius that the University of Lund [Lunds universitet] has approved of the proposal of sending a naturalist to America [see Linnaeus to the Academy, 21 January 1746{L0678}] [as companion to Pehr Kalm]. Linnaeus sincerely hopes that this person will not be an idiot.
Kalm should prepare himself for the journey; support from the scholarships issued by Piper’s, the Uppsala University [Uppsala universitet], Bielke’s, De Geer’s and the Office of Manufactures [Riksens Manufactur Contoir] should bring in enough money, at least 8, 000 dalers, he should have no more than 9,000; anyway, he should be on his way by Midsummer or [the journey] will never take place.
Linnaeus thanks for two lectures, one of them by Nils Rosén von Rosenstein [Tal, om en opartisk och förnuftig Medici förnämsta Göromål], the other speech was Carl Gustaf Tessin’s Kårt tal, om svenska språkets rykt och uppodlande]. What he is guilty of, he will pay next time he will see Elvius.
