Abstract
The Book of the Himyarites is a Syriac text preserved in fragments, dated to 932 CE. The fragments, used as padding in the binding of a 15th century manuscript, were discovered in 1920 by the owner of the volume, D. G. Wirén. The fragments were identified as a previously unknown work by Axel Moberg, professor of oriental languages, who also published a translation of the fragments in 1924.
The Book of the Himyarites describes the persecutions by Masruq (or Dhū-Nuwās), who in the 6th century was the ruler of Himyar, a state in South Arabia (now Yemen) that included the littoral on the Red Sea and Indian Ocean (with cities such as Najrān and Ẓafar) and inland territory inhabited by Bedouins. The work also describes the invasion of Kaleb (or Elesboam), the king of Axum, in 525. The Book was written by a Monophysite author immediately after the events described, probably on the basis of oral information from eyewitnesses.
These fragments constitute the only surviving remnant of the Book of the Himyarites, and are a crucial primary source for the history of Southern Arabia.
Notes
Fragment no. 44 is missing; nos. 53-57, containing fragments of another text, remain in private possession.
