Patrick Browne has returned to the West Indies. After a few days in Antigua, he reached the island of Saint Croix where he has seen many rare plants and some quite new ones, although he has not yet been able to see more than a small part of the island.
Browne mentions some of the species he has observed and gives the characteristics of one of them, called Prockia after the governor of the island [von Prock ].
Browne has only his copy of Systema naturae, 9th edition available, since the rest of his books are still under way. They were left behind in Antigua.
Browne wants to know from Linnaeus to whom his contact in Copenhagen, René & Joselin, should send the specimens he will be preparing and sending to Linnaeus. The same route can also be used by Linnaeus, and Browne is very eager to receive a copy of the catalogue of the Swedish King’s [Adolf Fredrik] collection Museum S:ae R:ae M:tis Adolphi Friderici Regis Suecorum].
Browne gives brief characteristics of two more species and writes that he may consider publishing the flora of the island, a project that will take him some years.
P.S. Browne asks Linnaeus to forgive the rather unstructured and raw style of the letter.
