Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 6 September 1941, the witness was arrested by the German authorities and transferred to the prison in Tarnów, accused of defamation. After three months´ imprisonment, she was among 73 other prisoners who were selected for transport to the Auschwitz concentration camp. When they arrived at their destination, they were taken to the baths. The newcomers were ordered to turn in their personal belongings, take a shower in cold water and change their clothes. The living conditions in the camp were horrible. Warm clothing became so sought that prisoners used to trade bread for pullover or underwear, which was strictly forbidden. If a female prisoner was found to have two headscarves or two sweaters, they would be confiscated and she would be punished. The SS doctor was directed the selections determining which inmates were able to work and which were not. The prisoner functionaries took a hard attitude towards their fellow inmates. The sick were plagued by rats in the infirmary. The mass transports of Hungarian Jews were being sent to the gas chambers. On 30 August 1944, the witness was transferred to Ravensbrück. The newly arrived prisoners were led into the bathhouse where they were ordered to take a bath and change their clothes. After bathing, they went into quarantine for five weeks. After finishing quarantine, they were assigned to a work crew that was responsible for shovelling sand.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
