Bengt Ferrner writes that his friends in Uppsala had told him that Linnaeus is not only alive but also is in good health. Peter Collinson in London and others in Leiden had enquired whether it was true that Linnaeus had died.. Pehr af Bjerkén, who recently had returned to Sweden from London will certainly have told Linnaeus everything worth mentioning concerning natural history, and far better than Linnaeus could expect from Ferrner. Consequently, Ferrner simply wished to tell Linnaeus that his friends, such as Collinson, William Watson, John Ellis, José Celestino Mutis, etc., will be most concerned about the rumour until they know that it was false. Ferrner therefore asks Linnaeus to write a few words as soon as possible, and also to tell Ferrner how long we must wait until the remaining part of the new edition of Systema naturae, 10th edition is ready [the 10th edition was published in two volumes, “Animalia” 1758 and “Vegetabilia” 1759. The third volume, “Mineralia” was never published]. Isaac Lawson, who studied with Linnaeus in Leiden, sends his regards and Ferrner assures Linnaeus that he will be at his service in England if Linnaeus so wishes.
