Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 20 June 1943, the witness was arrested and transferred to a prison in Tarnów, accused of being active in the National Youth Organization. The prison had been designed to hold about 600 inmates. When the witness arrived, the prison population was about 3000. Prisoners´ daily life consisted of inadequate food rations and executions. On 16 September 1943, the witness was transferred to the Pustków camp where about 1500 men and 120 women were held. About 500 Jews were isolated from the remaining inmates. Executions had been performed in the camp; about 8000 Russian prisoners of war were killed in Pustków. The transports continued coming; about 1000 Polish criminals were sent to Pustków. Many of them served as the prisoner functionaries who were in charge of disciplining and punishing inmates. By kidnapping a young woman, the Polish resistance movement blackmailed the camp authorities. Shortly after this action, the living conditions in Pustków improved substantially. Inmates who fell ill were laid up in the infirmary where they would be given lethal injections. Those who were unfit to work were exterminated.
Notes
The testimony has two appendices consisting of 1) layout of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, 2) sketch of the crematorium at Sachsenhausen concentration camp, please see Related records.
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
