Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
The institute deemed some of the testimonies to contain particularly sensitive information, and therefore chose to classify them until 2004. This is one of the previously classified testimonies.
In September 1939, the Russians entered Poland. A few weeks later, the civilian population was informed that the Polish school pupils would be taught the history of communism. It was strictly forbidden to teach the Polish history, religion and geography. In the Łapy area there were two different types of school: many Jewish children attended a Russian school, assigned for communists. The witness attended a high-school for the Polish-speaking school pupils. The Polish speaking-teachers were gradually replaced with the Russians. It happened quite often that the Polish-speaking pupils were leaving the classroom during communism lectures, protesting against the Russian regime. The witness was one of the school-pupils who refused to learn the history of communism. Those school pupils who did not follow the rules and regulations were expelled from school and forced to labour. At that time, mass executions were being carried out and many Polish citizens were being deported deep into Russia. A group of low educated Jews served in the Russian police forces and they took a hard attitude towards the Polish population. A number of intellectual Jews were against the Russian authorities and their relation to Poles was rather chummy. After a Jewish policeman had been killed, the Polish population of the village Dąbrowa was decimated. The witness’ school-mates were considering the possibility of being involved in the Polish underground organization. After one of the school-mates had destroyed a portrait of Stalin, the whole school-class was arrested by the secret service, N.K.V.D. Children were taken for interrogation to Brześć. After finishing interrogation, all the school-pupils were released except the witness and her best friend. Those two girls were put into an overcrowded prison cell. A few months later, the witness’ friend was deported to Russia. On 25 June 1941, the Russian authorities had to leave the city, fearing the German occupation. All the inmates were released thanks to the civilian population who had stormed the prison.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
