Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
The witness was among 50 Polish citizens who were caught by the Germans during the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944. They were herded to Forty Mokotowskie where they would be divided up. The witness was taken to Pruszków where she reunited with her relatives. After three days, the female prisoners were loaded onto cattle wagons, 50 women to a wagon, and transported to Ravensbrück. The journey took two weeks. When they arrived at their destination, they were met by SS men and female guards with dogs who accompanied them on the trip to the camp. The newcomers were herded over to a giant tent where they would spend three days. Then they were taken to the bathhouse where they were told to take a shower and change their clothes. When the whole process was completed, they were assigned to a regular barrack. After a week, they were selected for a labour transport to Beendorf. The daily life consisted of brutal treatment, unhygienic conditions, starvation, limited access to water and fresh air. On 12 April 1945, all the prisoners were forced to leave the camp because the Americans were drawing near. The prisoners were loaded onto cattle wagons and set out from Beendorf. During the horrible trip a number of Polish prisoners were killed by the German guards.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
