Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
During World War II, the witness was arrested in Toruń and transported to Gestapo’ s HQ in Bydgoszcz where he was imprisoned for five months, accused of being active in the Polish Home Army A.K. After arriving at the prison, the new inmates were badly tortured by the guards. If anyone collapsed, he would be doused with water. On February 1943, the witness was among 84 other Polish men from the Toruń transport, who were forced to do physical exercises, which was one of the most feared forms of torture. After five weeks´imprisonment, the inmates were transferred to the prison nearby Bydgoszcz where they would be used as slave laborers. At the end of the long working day, all the inmates were made to run back to the prison. Those who were unable to obey the order would be assigned to the death crew. In January 1943, the witness was transferred to Gross-Rosen where 8000 prisoners of mixed nationalities, aged between 17 and 50 years, were held. The newcomers were assigned to the makeshifts barracks. After a week, they were organized into work crews for special purposes. The witness was assigned to hard physical labour in quarries. The German criminals with green badges – who were in charge - used to kill their fellow inmates in order to confiscate their daily bread rations. In February 1944, the witness was selected for a labour transport to Braunschweig where the prisoners had to work 12-hour shifts.
Notes
The testimony has an appendix consisting of a layout of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, please see Related records.
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
