Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
During the Warsaw evacuation in 1944, many Polish girls were pulled into gateways where acts of rape were performed on them. It was done by Ukrainians. The witness along with her children were taken to the transient camp in Pruszków. Shortly afterwards, they were loaded onto trains that took them to Auschwitz. A few weeks later, the witness along with one of her daughters were transferred to Ravensbrück. The newcomers were made to parade naked before the camp doctor who was directed the selections determining which prisoners were able to work and which were not. In December 1944, the witness along with her daughter were selected for a labour transport to Meuselwitz. The German supervisors who were in charge took a hard attitude towards the prisoners. Those inmate workers who did not follow the rules and regulations were punished by flogging. At the end of January 1945, the witness was sent back to Ravensbrück because she was heavily pregnant. After arriving at Ravensbrück, she was assigned to a regular barrack where she was protected by a Polish prisoner functionary. At that time, the infant mortality rate was very high in the camp. The witness was sent to work in the woods after her baby had died in the camp. Prisoners who were unfit to work were selected for transports to the gas chambers.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
