Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 30 August 1944, the witness was among many other Warsaw evacuees who were taken to Pruszków. Acts of rape were performed on young Polish women. In Pruszków the men were separated from the women and children. The female inmates were transported to Ravensbrück. The newcomers spent two days outdoors, waiting for registration. They were herded to the baths where they were ordered to turn in all items in their possession and change their clothes. After bathing, they went into quarantine for three weeks. After finishing quarantine, they were selected for labour transports. The witness was among a number of prisoners who were sent to Beendorf. After two Polish prisoners had escaped from the camp, their fellow inmates were made to stand at attention in the rain. Conditions worsened particularly as food became scarce. The daily life consisted of physically demanding work, inadequate food rations, limited access to water and brutal treatment. At the beginning of April 1945, the camp was evacuated. Prisoners were loaded onto cattle wagons, 150 women to a wagon, and set off for an unknown destination. The horrible journey lasted two weeks. Women could hardly breathe from the lack of air and their weakened condition. When they reached their destination, they were sent to different camps near Hamburg. The witness was transported to the Altona camp where about 50 Polish prisoners had been organized into work crews for special purposes such as digging trenches.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
