Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 10 April 1941, the witness´entire family was arrested and sent to Cracow’s Montelupich jail, accused of being active in the underground. After finishing interrogation, she was forced to sign the interrogation transcript without having a chance to read it. For days she listened to the screams of the men being interrogated. Waiting in fear for new interrogations, one of the female inmates committed suicide in her prison cell. On 13 September 1941, the witness was among a number of prisoners who were selected for transport to Ravensbrück. The newcomers went into quarantine for six weeks. After finishing quarantine, they were assigned to a regular job inside the camp. The witness´ daughter served as a prisoner doctor in the camp until she was sent to the punishment block (Bunker). After being released from the Bunker, she was assigned to a work crew that was responsible for the agricultural labour. Then the witness´ daughter was selected for a labour transport to the Neubrandenburg airplane factory. When she returned to Ravensbrück, she was sent to the Bunker for a few days.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
