Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
In August 1942, the Tarnów Ghetto was established. According to the German authorities, all Jews would be forced to labour. Those who had been hiding in their houses would be executed by the Ukrainian guards who were in charge. In September 1943, the witness was among a number of Jews who were transferred to the Płaszów camp. When they arrived at their destination, they were met by the Jewish prisoner functionaries “Odemani” who accompanied them on the trip to the camp. The newcomers were ordered to turn in all items in their possession, especially valuables were requested. The living conditions were dreadful. In July 1944, about 400 Jewish children were separated from their mothers and sent to Auschwitz. On 7 August 1944, the witness was among 7000 other Jewish women who were transferred to Auschwitz. Their arrival at the camp followed the standard procedure; they had to bath, hand over all their things and change into old rags.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
