Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, Polish civilians were encouraged by German authorities to surrender by hanging out white flags. The witness was among a large number of Warsaw evacuees who were transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. The newcomers were taken to the baths where they were told hand over all their belongings. After bathing, they went into quarantine for three weeks. Then they underwent disinfection and bathing, and their hair was shaved off. They spent the entire day and night standing in order to complete the formalities of registration. On 1 October 1944, the witness was selected for transport to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The journey lasted three days. The combination of inadequate food rations, brutal treatment, unhygienic conditions, infection diseases and lack of proper medical care made all the prisoners feel exhausted. When people were starving to death, there were frequent instances of cannibalism.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
