Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
In August 1944, the liquidation of the Łódź ghetto had begun and labour transports of Jews would be organized by the German authorities. The living conditions worsened particularly as food became scarce. After the Germans had decided to empty the Łódź ghetto, labour round-ups would often take place. A number of Jews volunteered for the transports. On 28 August 1944, the witness was among many Jews who were herded to the railway station. They were loaded onto cattle wagons and sent to Auschwitz. Prisoners were not fed during the journey, nor were they let out to relive themselves. When they arrived at their destination, they were unloaded and divided up. The young and healthy inmates were herded to the baths where they were ordered to turn in all items in their possession and change their clothes. Five days later, the witness was among 1500 other prisoners who were selected for transport to Stutthof. The newcomers were assigned to an overcrowded barrack. The daily food rations were often being confiscated by the guards. The death rate began to rise significantly; between 50 and 70 inmates died daily. On 21 April 1945, the camp was evacuated. About 750 prisoners were embarked on the German ships but only 132 survived the voyage.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
