Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
In 1940, the witness was taken to Gestapo´s HQ in Lublin where he was tortured during interrogation, accused of being active in the underground. When the interrogation ended, he was transferred to the Lublin castle where he was incarcerated. He was put into an overcrowded cell where 35 inmates were held. Many prisoners were executed. The executions were carried out at the Jewish cemetery. On 15 August 1941, the witness was among 800 other prisoners who were loaded onto cattle wagons, 80 inmates to a wagon, and transported to Auschwitz. About 30 young prisoners, boys aged 13-16, escaped from the transport. About 200 prisoners died during the horrible journey and their bodies were burned in the crematoriums at Auschwitz. Those who survived the transport were put through a selection. When the selection was completed, the newcomers were told to change into prison stripes. The witness was assigned to a work crew that was responsible for laying pipeline. In November 1941, the witness was selected for a labour transport to Buchenwald where the political prisoners were held. In November 1942, the witness was transferred to Dora in order to be forced to hard physical labour in tunnels. Working under reduced light conditions was extremely dangerous; many prisoners become seriously injured. Those who were accused of sabotage were executed. In April 1945, the camp was evacuated and the prisoners were transported to Bergen-Belsen.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
