Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 3 Mars 1943, the witness was arrested by the Gestapo in Hamburg on charges of perpetrating sabotage. During his two months in prison, the witness was driven to the Gestapo station every other day for interrogation. Without being asked any questions, he was ordered to tell everything he knew. The witness had nothing to say which led to beating. Two months later he was transferred to Neuengamme where he would be used as an ironworker. After the German authorities had decided that the camp would be evacuated, the inmates were loaded onto trains and transported to Lübeck. When they arrived at their destination, they were embarked onto ships: Cap Arcona, Deutschland, Thielbek and Athen. Thielbek and Cap Arcona were destroyed by English bombers. According to the witness’ testimony about 14 800 inmates were on board the ships but only a few hundred survived.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
