Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the witness was among a number of Polish citizens – the Warsaw evacuees - who were taken to the transient camp in Pruszków. On 2 September 1944, she was transferred to Auschwitz. On 1 October 1944, she was sent on to Ravensbrück. The newcomers were led into the bathhouse where they were ordered to turn in the rest of their personal belongings, take a bath and change their clothes. After bathing they went into quarantine. After three weeks the quarantine ended and the witness was assigned to a regular barrack where the sanitary conditions were horrible. Some of the prisoner functionaries protected the elderly and sick women. There were also guards who took a hard attitude towards those prisoners who were unable to work. Suicide was a fairly common occurrence at Ravensbrück. Pregnant women were assigned to a separate barrack. The infant mortality rate was very high in the camp.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
