Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
At the beginning of April 1945, rumors started going round that the Ravensbrück concentration camp was going to be evacuated. The camp authorities behaved nervously, waiting for new orders from Berlin. After Auschwitz had been evacuated, thousands of inmates were forced to leave the camp and set out on a trek. Many died from fatigue. Those who were unable to walk were executed by the guards. By constantly checking their list of the prison population, the Nazis were preparing for the evacuation of Ravensbrück. The older and weak-looking women were taken away and sent to the “chimney”. The rumors ultimately proved to be true. On 24 April 1945, the first transport departed, leaving Ravensbrück behind. Prisoners were loaded onto wagons and sent away. There was a heavy bombardment during the trip and a number of women became wounded. On 25 April 1945, the witness was among 500 other women who were sent to the punishment block (Bunker), waiting for a new transport. Despite how crowded it was in the bunker, prisoners felt like they had been rescued. On 28 April 1945, the witness along with her fellow prisoners left the bunker. They were given Red Cross parcels. Shortly afterwards, they were led out of the camp.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
