Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 19 April 1940, the witness’ teacher was executed by the Nazis in Gdańsk, accused of working in a clandestine organisation. The witness was among a number of school pupils who were taken to the railroad station. They were loaded onto cattle wagons, 100 people to a wagon, and transported to Neustrelitz where they were divided up: the boys were separated and taken away. The girls were put into a prison cell. The newcomers were not fed during two days. There were instances of cannibalism, which was practiced by the prisoners. The newly arrived inmates were ordered to change into prison stripes and they were assigned to work in the Neustrelitz munitions factory. Those women who were accused of sabotage were executed in public. The daily life consisted of brutal treatment, physically demanding work, unhygienic conditions, inadequate food rations, lack of proper medical care and overcrowded barracks. On 7 April 1945, the factory had been destroyed by the Nazis and all the prisoners were forced to leave the camp.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
