Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 24 February 1943, the witness was arrested and transported to Warsaw´s Pawiak jail. The next day she was interrogated by the Gestapo. During two months the witness saw Jewish prisoners being executed. She met some young men whose teeth had been knocked out by the SS. On 28 April 1943, the witness was among 107 other women who were selected for transport to Auschwitz. When they arrived at their destination, they were met by SS-men who accompanied them on the trip to the camp. The whole process began with undressing and turning in clothes and personal belongings. The newcomers had to take a shower and change their clothes in front of a group of SS-men who watched them closely. After a few days the quarantine ended and the witness was assigned to hard work inside the camp. She fell ill and was unable to eat but she recovered fast thanks to a Jewish physician who took care of her.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
