Notes
Obverse description: Arms of Papal States with cardinals hat, keys and cross of Malta and radiant dove symbolizing the holy spirit above.
Reverse description: Female figure symbolizing the Holy Roman Church with radiant head seating on clouds with in her hands a pair of keys. On the right the temple of Salamo.
Obverse legend: SEDE. VACAN - TE. MDCCCLXXIII (''Papal seat being vacante, 1823'').
Reverse legend:AUXILIUM DE SANCTO (''help from the sanctuary'', Psalm 19:3).
History: After the death or resignation of a pope, the Holy See enters a period of sede vacante (''the papel seat being vacant''). During this period, special coins are issued, with a dove symbolizing the holy ghost on the obverse and the desigination SEDE VACANTE on the reverse.
