Obverse description: Crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left, the dress decorated with roses, thistles and shamrocks; at edge below the bust in small letters the artist's initials W.W. (for William Wyon); around in Gothic letters.
Reverse description: Crowned cruciform shields of England, Scotland and Ireland, national flower emblems in angles, legend around.
Obverse legend: Victoria d:g:britt: reg:f:d:mdccclii (''Victoria, by the grace of God, queen of Britain, defender of the faith, 1852'').
Reverse legend: One florin one tenth of a pound.
History: The 'Gothic' florin was introduced during the reign of Victoria (1837-1901) as an experimental issue for decimal currency. Valued at one tenth of a pound, several names were suggested by the London mint, including ‘Centum, Decade and Dime’, before the British parliament on the term Florin.
While we are nowadays used to seeing a crowned king or queen on the coins of Great Britain, the portrait of Victoria wearing a crown was highly unusual at the time and it was the first coin to feature a crowned monarch for over 2 centuries.
The coin earned its name from the distinctive Gothic-style inscription on the obverse side. This features a combination of upper and lower-case letters and Roman numerals to signify the date which are very peculiar design features for a British coin.
