Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 25 January 1944, the witness was among 1800 other prisoners who were forced to leave the Campiegne camp. The French Red Cross distributed food parcels among the prisoners. The elderly and seriously ill inmates were put into a special wagon where they could sit down. The remaining prisoners were loaded onto freight wagons, 100 people to a wagon, and sent to Germany. During the journey which took five days and four nights a number of male prisoners escaped. On 30 January 1944, the transport arrived at the Buchenwald railway station. The newcomers were met by SS men with dogs who accompanied them on the trip to the camp. After arriving at the camp, they were herded to the baths where they were ordered to turn in all items in their possession, take a shower and change their clothes. When the whole procedure was completed, they were assigned to a quarantine barrack. The intellectuals were badly treated in Buchenwald by their communist fellow inmates. On 13 Mars 1944, the witness was among 1000 other prisoners who were sent to the Mittelbau-Dora camp. The newly arrived prisoners were assigned to a work crew that was responsible for building tunnels. The death rate began to rise significantly as a result of brutal treatment, hard labour and inadequate food rations. The living conditions in Mittelbau-Dora improved after the factory owners had realized that the economic growth was dependent on highly skilled workers. Those inmates who fell ill were laid up in the infirmary without any medical supplies. On 3 April 1945, the camp was evacuated. The prisoners were loaded onto trains and sent to Hannover. Many inmates died during the horrible journey that took seven days. When they arrived at their destination, they were transferred to Bergen-Belsen. Those who were unable to walk were executed by the guards. On 15 April 1945, the Bergen-Belsen camp was liberated by the English.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
