Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
On 18 June 1940, the witness and his friend Kazimierz Zarudski were arrested by the Gestapo and sent to an old fortress called “Rotunda” in Zamość which had been converted into prison. A number of Polish citizens had been gathered up in the “Rotunda”, waiting for interrogations. Prisoners were forced to do physical exercises as punishment and those who were unable to do the exercises properly were beaten by the Nazi guards. After six days, the witness was transferred to a prison in Lublin where he was placed in an overcrowded prison cell. At the end of July 1940, the witness was transported by train to Sachsenhausen. The new prisoners were herded to the baths where they were given cold showers. Then they were ordered to change into prison stripes. They were assigned to a regular barrack and to a regular job. The witness was assigned to a work crew called “Klinkiernia” that was responsible for manufacturing of bricks. In Mars 1945, the Danish and Norwegian prisoners were transported to Neuengamme by the Swedish Red Cross.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
