Abstract
This document is part of a series of interviews with former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps. The interviews were conducted in 1945-1946 by the Polish Research Institute in Lund.
During World War II, the witness was assigned to a German farm in order to be used as slave labour. After her aunt had become seriously ill, the witness decided to leave the farm without asking for permission. Her attempt to escape failed. She was captured and sent to Auschwitz where she quite unexpectedly met her mother. Overcrowded barracks, limited access to food, ever-lengthening roll calls, hard physical work and corporal punishment made living in the camp difficult. After two months, the witness was sent to Ravensbrück where she was laid up in the infirmary. Accused of making food parcels for her fellow inmates, the witness was sent to the punishment block for two weeks. She was selected for a labour transport to Neubrandenburg where she would be assigned to work in a German factory. Accused of sabotage, she was punished by the Nazis and sent to work in the woods.
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
