Book binding
Binding: Blind-tooled light red sheepskin binding; Sweden, Lund University library bindery, signed in pencil: G. Borgström 1965 . Size: 188 x 140 x 40 mm.
Light red sheepskin binding over rounded wooden boards. Two metal hook-clasp fastenings at fore-edge and five preserved round metal bosses on each cover. Rounded spine, tight back with three double raised bands. Blind-tooled library code on leather label at the tail of the back. Embroidered endbands of white linen. Former edge trimming preserved. Separate pastedowns of parchment, back pastedown restored. All along sewing on three raised double cords laced through the boards.
The covers are blind-tooled with double line fillets to a frame and a central panel with a saltire.
Decoration
The decoration consists of two larger pen flourished initials, seven smaller, and a secondary diagram at the lower pastedown. The smaller initials (f. 1v (two) 3r , 4v , 6v , 8r , 19r , 21v ) all belonging to the Augustinus de Ancona text are alternating blue and red with pen flourishes in both colours, dense filigranated pattern, with characteristic features as short strokes crossing the longer lines with four dots in the occuring sections.
Detailed description: f. 1r a blue three line initial Q with filigranated filling and dense filigranated pen flourishes in red, once enhanced with blue details (now faded). The pen flourish continues into a chain of interconected I-initials in alternating blue and red; f. 45r an eight line initial E with intarsiated body in red and blue, dense filigranated filling in red with blue details and filigranated pen flourishes mainly in blue with red details, curling into spirals at two corners; On lower pastedown a crude circular diagram in brownish red ink, composed by six concentric circles and 19 radiant lines, dividing the diagram into one inner circular field and 95 smaller rectangular fields, all empty.
Style: Although the initials of both texts have features in common, they are decisively executed by two different artists working in the same environment. The date 1300 marking the beginning of the tables on f. 131v is coherent with the style of the initials.
