Abstract
Certificate regarding Janina Iwanska's letter, written by Wanda Kiedrzyńska in 1968, testifying that the envelope contains a secret message regarding the medical experiments performed at Ravensbrück concentration camp.
English full text translation:
"Regarding Janina Iwańska´s letters
The envelope contains letters of Janina Iwańska, a political prisoner at the female concentration camp in Ravensbrück, subjected for the medical experiments.
The letters were sent to the sender´s father Bolesław Iwański, living in Lublin. That was an illegal correspondence, the letters were sent under an imaginary name Janina Uważanka and they were posted in Templin by the female prisoners who were assigned to the agricultural labour outside the camp.
On the envelope, addressed to Mrs Józefina Zabaryła, a text written in urine will be displayed after heating it up over a candle flame. It was a method used in the legal correspondence as well. A hidden message about the medical experiments, executions and other events related to the camp life was written in urine between the visible lines. In this way, the families received information about the camp, it was the only way to get the information out.
Dr Wanda Kiedrzyńska
Lund, 18 November 1968."
Notes
About the collection: At the end of World War II approximately 20,000 Nazi concentration camp prisoners were evacuated to Sweden. Many of them were Polish citizens. In order to document their experiences, Zygmunt Łakociński founded the Polish Research Institute in Lund. The collection contains 512 in-depth interviews with survivors, materials that they brought with them to Sweden, and also other material that the institute collected, compiled, and created.
